Online Casino Licenses

All countries wishing to offer some form of online gambling must hold an Online Gaming License that is within the jurisdiction of where their main operations are based.

These licenses must be purchased from the local Gaming Commission depending on where the new operators main office is. The price can be expensive and is non refundable, so even if the application for a license fails, the operator could lose anything from $10,000-$20,000.

Licenses were brought about so that online gambling could be regulated to the extent that online casinos and sports betting sites would be under the spotlight throughout their operation and can be a good way of "putting off" some rogue organisations that cannot afford the license. Many do however bypass the this and simply do not get a license at all.

There are many Gaming Commissions that offer licenses to would-be casinos with the main coming from Kahnawake, Antigua and Barbuda, Malta, Cyprus and the United Kingdom. A few Islands in there you may ask and this is purely due to tax reasons. Whilst online gaming has a tax of 15% in the UK for such companies, Channel Islands such as Malta and Gibraltar are slightly different where tax is concerned which is why many establishments apply for licenses in these countries and set up base camp there.

All legitamate Online Gambling Establishments should hold a license. If they do not they could and should be classed as Rogue Casinos which do nothing for the industry and who´s only objective in life is to steal money - and as mush as they can before getting caught.

Obbviously where licenses are concerned, each country has their own view of what is best regulated and what is not and there is no governing body to regulate online gambling worldwide. This could therefore mean that the Gaming Commission in Costa Rica may not be as heavy handed with foul play as Malta would be. This can have a very negative affect on players who have perhaps been robbed of any cash with the Gaming Commission turning a blind eye to it in one country whilst carrying out a thorough investigation in the other.
